Slumdog Millionaire Task 1 - The Film

Slumdog Millionaire is the story of Jamal Malik (Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India¹s "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show¹s questions. Each chapter of Jamal¹s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show¹s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out.

The director of this film is Danny Boyle who has also directed the film Trainspotting (1996), The Beach (2000) and Millions (2004).

The budget for the film was $15 million. It was produced by the British companies Celador Films ad Film4 Productions. Slumdog Millionaire was filmed in many parts of India but mainly Mumbai. The other parts where in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Juhu, Maharashtra, ND Studios and Karjat.

The main characters of the film are Jamal Malik who is played by British Indian actor Dev Patel. He was also one of the main characters in the TV drama Skins. He has become famous on an international scale. Latika is played by Indian actress and professional model Freida Pinto. She has not been in any other films but is said to be featured in upcoming films. She has not become famous on an international scale. Prem Kumar is played by Indian actor and producer Anil Kapoor. He has been in Apradhi, Salaam-e-Ishq and Mr.India (1987). He has become famous on an international scale.

Slumdog Millionaire was distributed by Pathe Pictures International, Film4, Celador Films, Warner Bros and Fox Searchlight Pictures. It was distributed in United Kindgom, United States, Austrailia, India and Asian-Pacific.

The film is from India and Britain. Though it is set in India the language used is English. The majority of the actors are Indian, all the filming was done in India but the producer and director are both British. The film as a whole is mainly Indian as everything in the film is from India and not Britain.

The film was given Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Cinematography (Anthony Dod Mantle), Best Director (Danny Boyle) ect. BAFTA Awards were given for Best Director (Danny Boyle), Best Film (Christian Colson) etc. Golden Glode Awards were given for Best Picture (Drama), Best Screenplay (Simon Beaufoy), Best Director (Danny Boyle) etc.

Slumdog Millionaire featured in the Toronto International Film Festivals, London Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival.
